For most of us, our primary residence is practical by necessity. We eat, sleep, and bathe there, in addition to the myriad other routine activities that make up our daily lives. But second homes are different – in addition to providing an opportunity to invest in real estate, much of their purpose is for recreation or rejuvenation. Second homes or vacation properties shape the way we unwind, enjoy time with each other, and rejuvenate ourselves, often in a natural environment. The modality of a second home varies from person to person, family to family, but each has a distinctive season and particular place. One friend of ours tells stories of camping on land near the Methow Valley, catching bull frogs in the pond with his daughters. Another tells of their annual sailboat trek around Vancouver Island to reach the water that’s warm enough for swimming in the summer. Other friends make an annual trip to Orcas Island with friends they’ve known for years. And another explores winter routes for dog sled training up North. Our own personal manifestation is to head to the Olympics each Fall to collect mushrooms and explore the quiet beauty of Northwest forests in the rain.
