Okay, so maybe clean gutters aren’t the key to happiness, but they may be the key to a dry basement this winter!
Home inspectors will tell you that when it comes to basement moisture, simple gutter problems are often the culprit. Gutters collect a huge amount of water from the roof, channel it through downspouts and (ideally) deliver it away from the foundation of your house. Splash blocks are not enough! Water should be directed at least five feet away from the foundation, through smooth-walled (rather than corrugated) pipe. A downspout may also connect to an underground drainage system. Like the gutters and downspouts themselves, underground systems can become clogged with debris (dirt, leaves, shingle granules) and need maintenance or replacement. Fortunately, there are many different ways to retrofit your drainage system.
With winter rains coming, now is the time to take a few minutes to be sure your property’s drainage system is in good shape. You’ll be glad you did when your basement stays dry and fresh this year!
Here are a few other tips:
- Inspect (or hire a professional to inspect) the roof, gutters and all flashings once a year.
- Twice a year, clean any leaves and debris from your gutters and check all joints & connections. If you live under cover of trees, you may need to do this more often.
- Make sure downspouts are directed at least 5 feet away from the house, through secure, smooth-walled pipe that slopes away from the house.
- Clear or repair underground drainage systems if they “back up.”
I’d be happy to refer a professional if you need one for any of these projects. Don't hesitate to call! I want your basement to stay dry this winter as much as you do!
